Nash has an experienced SaLT team as part of the specialised therapy team, and we work closely with all the students at Nash College, and with the different teams of staff within the college to support our students. The SaLT have two major components to their work:

Our drive is for all students to be able to communicate their choices/preferences, needs, and opinions for functional communication by whatever means they are able to do so, and to develop their independence for their future post Nash College. We determine what additional support a student may need to enhance their communication and this can range from Objects of Reference, real objects, photos, symbols, PECs, communication books, switches and Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCAS) that can also be controlled by eye movements for those with complex physical limitations. A large part of our role here is also staff training. We train all staff on communication strategies.

Eating and drinking

A large proportion of our students have complex needs and do demonstrate great difficulties with swallowing food/drink or their saliva. This is called Dysphagia and can be very dangerous for our vulnerable students. Nash College is fortunate to have experienced Dysphagia practitioners on site to support these students. We train staff on how to support students with Dysphagia.
