Allied Therapy

The Allied Therapy team is made up of music therapists and complementary therapists. Allied Therapists support students’ emotional and psychological well-being and social development. We provide highly specialist therapeutic support that is intensive, proactive and person-Centred and delivered by qualified practitioners to support students during their time at Nash College. We aim to empower students to express their emotions and promote their sense of independence and self-advocacy, and support them to develop skills to sustain relationships and friendships. We aim to encourage students to develop skills and resources so that they can be an active member of the community. Therapies can offer a space for students to make sense of their physical and emotional transition into adulthood and explore their shifting identity as a young adult.

A therapy session offers students an opportunity to develop and integrate skills that they are working on in other areas of their learning, including gross motor, listening, sequencing, choosing, requesting, attention etc. Sessions offer a space where students can be themselves, develop their self-awareness and explore their identity. Within a therapeutic relationship students can creatively explore and communicate their experience of the world around them and develop their capacity to share their thoughts and feelings with others in ways that are meaningful to them.

Our therapists are skilled in using communication aids as part of therapy sessions, and observing and understanding small changes in facial expressions, body language, vocalisations, feelings and vitality affect as communication. Allied Therapists work closely with other therapists, education and care staff and external agencies to ensure that students are supported holistically and are offered joined up and person-centered services.

Music Therapy

Students are offered a confidential space where they can safely express and communicate their thoughts and feelings. Students can develop their communication and expression skills, and explore new ways of relating to others whilst engaging in shared experiences using words, music, vocalisations, sounds, movements and gestures. The music in the sessions can take many forms including improvised music making, song-writing, playing known songs and using music technology. The content of sessions will adapt to each student’s individual needs following full assessment by the Music Therapist. Music Therapy sessions can be individual, paired or group sessions depending on what is most beneficial for the student. Music therapists are registered with, and regulated by, the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Complementary Therapy

Students can choose from a range of massage and relaxation techniques, aromatherapy and reflexology to promote wellbeing of body and mind. Complementary Therapy sessions aim to support students feel calm and relaxed and to develop their self-regulation skills.
